Staff Testimonials
As a lawyer at CLAS, you get to work with amazing colleagues and even more amazing clients. It is such a rare opportunity to do work that is both interesting and meaningful. I can’t think of a better place to work.
– Kevin, Lawyer
In my time at CLAS I worked in the Mental Health Law Program (MHLP). In the MHLP I provided legal information to people detained under the BC Mental Health Act and advocated for clients at Review Panel Hearings. As an advocate CLAS taught me how to structure and present oral arguments at a hearing, how to collect evidence, and how to build relationships with participants. As a first year student it is rare to have so much responsibility. Aside from aiding in the resolution of legal issues, I connected with participants on an emotional level. It was rewarding to help improve the social and legal conditions of those who have been marginalized for most of their lives.
The summer experience at CLAS is fantastic! The staff is knowledgeable and incredibly supportive. I was fortunate to train and work with two amazing interns that quickly became close friends. The office is an extremely comfortable environment. Speaking to my peers I believe that I had a unique summer position. My work at CLAS was the highlight of my law school experience to date.
– Joshua, Law Student
It is really rewarding to do work that has the simple purpose of helping people. Everyone who works here, I think, believes we all can and should do our best to contribute to our communities with our work. There’s a certain camaraderie that results from this shared belief, one that makes CLAS a really great workplace.
– Dan, Lawyer
I work for CLAS because of what the organization stands for and the people that CLAS represents. My clients are diagnosed with mental illness and are faced with involuntary care under the BC Mental Health Act. The role I take to assist my client within this system is often empowering and gives them a sense of being heard. The compassion and care that my colleagues put into their work and the empathy they show for their clients motivates me to give the best service I can to each individual client.
– Josh, Legal Advocate
Back in 1992, after completing a job re-entry program, I was thrilled to be hired by CLAS for an entry level support staff position. This gave me the opportunity to put my newly acquired skills to use, to learn many more, and to work for an organization assisting disadvantaged people, which was important to me. 25 years later, I am still here. I credit that to enjoying my work and the staff at CLAS, who feel more like my second family to me. I would not commute three hours a day if I didn’t feel this way! I so appreciate the flexibility and understanding that CLAS management have shown me in order to balance my work and home life. It is not always an easy task in these busy times, but with mutual understanding, trust and respect, CLAS has allowed this to work. I have been truly blessed.
